The aim of this work was to support Jisc in investigating and piloting a potential new service to enable Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to benefit from more informed decision-making around acquisition of digital archival collections.
The project involved consultation through workshops and webinars with 12 pilot institutions, together with data analysis and production of a final report with recommendations. It ran alongside another related pilot, the Jisc digital archival collections group purchasing pilot undertaken in collaboration with three publishers to review opportunities for making purchase of digital archival collections more affordable for institutions.
The work undertaken by Sero HE exposed the difficulties of defining digital archival collections and helped to create a better definition as a basis for supporting HEIs. It also helped to identify solutions to the provision of information about these collections. The effectiveness of such information should help to lighten the load when librarians are making purchasing decisions.
